What is adult ADHD?

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects the brain and causes difficulty in focusing and concentrating. The disorder is most commonly associated with children, but more and more adults are being diagnosed with the disease. It is estimated that 8 million adults in the United States have ADHD.


How do I know if I have ADHD?

Adults with ADHD tend to be inefficient, easily distracted, impulsive, emotional, display low self-esteem and worry about being judged. If you suspect you have ADHD because you display these symptoms, be sure to speak with your doctor.


How may ADHD affect my life?

ADHD affects all aspects of life. Adults who have ADHD are more likely to be divorced, unemployed, change jobs frequently and also to abuse drugs, smoke cigarettes and have more driving accidents. Additionally, 70 percent of adults with ADHD have or have had another mental health problem, such as depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder.


What treatments are available for ADHD?

There are various treatment options available for ADHD. It may include counseling, behavioral therapy, one of various stimulant medications or some combination of these options. It is important to consider all treatment possibilities and think about what would fit best into your lifestyle to maximize your chances of success.

How You Can Prepare for a Discussion with Your Doctor

  • Ask your doctor if there is a local support group or therapist that can help
  • Prepare a list of difficulties you have at work or at home
  • Bring a binder or notebook to jot down notes during your doctor’s appointment.
  • Bring a list of your questions
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for further clarification if you don’t understand something
